ABOUT ME

Welcome! My name is Abby Navarro and this is my ePortfolio for Graduation with Leadership Distinction. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina-Columbia in May 2021 with a Bachelor of the Arts in Experimental Psychology and a minor in Business Administration. I am a Capstone scholar and Capstone fellow and I earned Graduation with Leadership Distinction in the Professional and Civic Engagement Pathway.

I came to the University of South Carolina in the fall of 2017 without a clear vision of what I wanted to do with my life or even in college. However, deep down I knew what my passions were, and throughout my four years here, I was able to lean into and grow those passions through leadership experiences, and therefore form a vision of what I want to do in my career. My passion for helping and understanding people grew into a major in psychology, a position as a student peer listener, a member of It’s On Us, a research assistant in a sexual violence psychology lab, an independent research study on men’s attitudes toward seeking mental help, and becoming a behavior technician providing behavior therapy at a center for kids with autism. My passion for being outside and playing beach volleyball led to founding and running a club sport organization and team for the past three years, giving many other students the opportunity to be active and play a sport they love while learning and developing who I am as a leader. My time at this university has shaped me and pushed me in so many ways into becoming who I am today. My long-term goal is still to help people in some capacity, but I now know I want to do so within the field of mental health counseling and therapy. Right now, I am working and gaining clinical experience as a registered behavior technician in Greenville, SC before going back to school within the next few years.

In this portfolio, I will discuss many of these experiences and how what I learned in my classes interacted with them and helped me succeed. My key insights connect specific within-the-classroom concepts to beyond-the-classroom experiences I have had. My leadership section connects to my third key insight and takes it a step further by proposing a solution to a problem I see in our community. If you would like to view my iPoster for Discover USC on my independent research study, "How Levels of Femininity and Masculinity Affect Men’s Mental Help Seeking Attitudes" please follow this hyperlink or the link at the end of this page. I am excited to take all that I have learned and studied with me into my career and professional and personal life.
